Aramco, one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies, launched the first megawatt (MW)-scale renewable energy storage system using Iron-Vanadium (Fe/V) flow battery to store solar power for natural gas well operations. The 1-MW/hour flow battery system is installed in Wa’ad Al-Shamal, in western Saudi Arabia, to support up to five wells over its projected 25-year lifespan. Leading Canadian clean-tech company, Borna Membrane Solutions (SCD) plans to invest $40 million to establish a facility to manufacture flare gas recovery systems, carbon separation technologies, and reinjection solutions for the Egyptian natural gas network. This came during a meeting of the President of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), Hossam Heiba, with a delegation from Borna to discuss localizing the company’s technology in Egypt, in alignment with the government’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions. Iraq has signed a contract with a consortium consisting of China-based Geo-Jade Petroleum Corporation and Basra Crescent to develop the Iraqi Tuba field and increase its production from 20,000 b/d to 100,000 barrels per day (b/d) , according to Reuters. Whilst Iran’s controversial nuclear program is typically assessed from a geopolitical perspective, its viability as a component in Iran’s electricity sector often goes overlooked.
