Following his pledge in May to lift sanctions on Syria’s new government, Donald Trump signed an executive order on 30 June terminating the bulk of US sanctions on Syria, excluding those on “Bashar al-Assad, his associates, human rights abusers, drug traffickers, persons linked to chemical weapons activities, ISIS or its affiliates, and Iranian proxies.” The directive also orders the state department to review the terrorist status of Hayat al-Shams (HTS) as well as Ahmed Sharaa, Syria’s current president. LNG producers in the Gulf have signed short-term deals in recent days as they look to build their position in the global LNG market. On 4 July, QatarEnergy Trading inked a two-year deal with Australia’s Santos to receive 0.5mn t/y of LNG starting in 2026. The deal adds to QatarEnergy’s growing portfolio of LNG outside of its growing domestic supply. Modern Gas conducted the first residential natural gas connection in Hammam City, Matrouh Governorate. The company plans to supply 8,000 homes with natural gas, making it the third city in the Governorate to receive natural gas. Oil giant Saudi Aramco is currently negotiating with US-based Commonwealth LNG to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the planned export terminal in Cameron, Louisiana, according to four sources cited by Reuters. Two of the sources revealed that the discussions involve a potential supply deal of 2 million metric tons per year (mtpa) of LNG.
