29/04/2024 In a letter of 29 April, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate invited players to nominate blocks in connection with the first licensing round for mineral activities on the seabed. Asian LNG demand has had a muted start to 2025. Top global importer China in particular scaled back imports on the back of plentiful storage and high spot prices driven by European demand (MEES, 4 April). Asian LNG spot prices rose in the first quarter to over $14/mn BTU compared to $9/mn BTU at the start of 2024. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) entails capturing, transporting and storing CO2 from sources such as power generation or industrial emissions. 30/04/2024 The Norwegian Ministry of Energy has received applications from eight companies in connection with the announcement of two areas in the North Sea for potential storage of CO2 on the Norwegian shelf. The Ministry is processing the applications received and plans to award exploration licences in the second half of 2024. UAE firms Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum are set to boost gas output in Iraqi Kurdistan by more than 300mn cfd next year. The pair say they are accelerating work to add 250mn cfd via the KM250 project at their 500mn cfd-capacity Khor Mor gas field by 1Q 2026, and have initiated appraisal activities at nearby Chemchemal, where they target 70mn cfd of initial output in 2026 (see map & MEES, 4 April). Iran-US nuclear talks are set to continue in Rome on 19 April after initial 12 April discussions in Muscat which were described by both parties as “constructive.” But talks are overshadowed by mixed messaging from US president Trump’s cabinet, with hawkish members pushing for full dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program, rather than a deal that imposes a verifications system similar to the Obama-era 2016 JCPOA.
