As part of ongoing efforts to support national industry and enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), in coordination with the General Administration for Energy Efficiency and Climate, hosted the seventh meeting of the Technical Secretariat of the Ministerial Group tasked with addressing the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
The meeting was inaugurated by Alaa El Batal, MoPMR First Undersecretary and Supervisor of Occupational Health, Safety, Environment (HSE), Energy Efficiency and Climate, and Nermine Abu El-Atta, Advisor to the Minister of Trade and Industry for Sustainable Development and Head of the Technical Secretariat.
During his opening speech, El Batal emphasized the full support of Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, for the committee’s work and his commitment to closely following up on the outcomes of its regular meetings, in line with national efforts to modernize industry and sustain the competitiveness of Egyptian exports in global markets.
El Batal further reviewed the efforts made by MoPMR and its affiliated companies to foster energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. A total of 340 energy efficiency improvement projects were implemented, contributing to cutting 1.1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Meanwhile, Sarah Naguib, Director General at MoPMR, delivered a presentation highlighting key studies conducted by MoPMR-affiliated entities in the field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), in cooperation with several global energy companies and development partners. She also reviewed the main outcomes of the study, which was prepared by a specialized consultant in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.
Additionally, Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) presented an overview of its efforts to cut emissions and minimize the carbon footprint of its products in line with CBAM requirements. The Center of Excellence for Energy Transition also gave a comprehensive presentation on its activities and the services it provides in the field of energy transition and emissions reduction.
