The US has officially removed Syria from its list of ‘State Sponsors of Terrorism.’ The designation had restricted Western companies’ ability to do business in Syria since 1979, and the formal rescission on 24 August removes the last obstacle to Syria’s reintegration into the global economy.
The milestone is the geopolitical culmination of a process that began in May 2025 when Saudi Arabia brokered a landmark meeting in Riyadh between US President Donald Trump and his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa (MEES, 16 May 2025).
