Saudi Arabia’s electricity consumption is on a staggering upwards trajectory, making the task of displacing liquids from the power sector an increasingly challenging one. A record 160.5TWh was delivered to customers through the grid over the first six months of 2025, up 10% year-on-year (see charts 1 & 2). “We are growing, we are more efficient, and we are delivering a robust performance which is reflected in the following; strong growth in energy demand, which we meet with higher power production, better fleet availability and all without compromising on reliability or safety,” says Khalid bin Salim al-Ghamdi, the CEO of…
Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) announced on 7 August “the commencement of work on Bahrain’s first solar power plant for electricity generation.” The 150MW plant will be Bahrain’s first utility-scale solar facility and will be in the island’s south near Bilaj Al Jazayer. EWA says it “will be developed in partnership with the private sector.” Starting on 14 August it will “launch a global market sounding” with a tender scheduled for September and commercial operations planned to start in the third quarter of 2027. Mauritania is looking to capitalize on its offshore gas reserves to build out important domestic infrastructure. LNG exports have now started following the late-2024 start-up of the BP-operated 2.3mn t/y GTA project, and Mauritania is now pressing ahead with plans to develop new gas-fired power capacity. In May, Minister of Petroleum and Energy Mohamed Ould Khaled announced plans to add 550MW of gas-fired capacity to be fueled by gas sourced from GTA. His ministry has received offers to build a 230MW gas-fired CCGT plant, which are now under review, and it is also mulling whether to launch a public tender…
It’s unusual for two rival Israeli politicians from opposing camps to deliver the same message to the Iranian people, but that’s precisely what happened this week. Both current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett released video messages directly addressing Iranians, offering help with the country’s severe water crisis. Iran is currently facing a severe water shortage, especially in the capital, Tehran. This issue, which has been growing for decades, is a major problem throughout the country. It is widely attributed to government negligence, a struggling economy, and increasingly tight international sanctions.Mr Netanyahu’s message went further, blaming…

Australian Energy Producers will recommend a prospective reservation policy as part of a suite of actions to deliver more gas supply to the domestic market and provide certainty to gas producers and users. In a submission to the Gas Market Review, Australian Energy Producers said a collaborative approach is needed to deliver enduring and sustainable solutions to future-proof the gas market and break the cycle of short-term fixes, market interventions and looming shortfalls. “The Government’s Future Gas Strategy makes it clear that natural gas will remain critical to Australia’s energy security through to 2050 and beyond,” Australian Energy Producers Chief…
Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, chaired on Thursday the 23rd meeting of the Supreme Council of Energy to discuss providing the necessary infrastructure and energy for a number of energy-intensive industrial activities to support national and investment projects. The Council reviewed requests from ministries, authorities, and companies to secure electricity and natural gas for some projects, including 14 new industrial projects and existing facilities which are expanding their capacities. Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdulghani announced prematurely in Kirkuk on 6 August that exports would restart “today or tomorrow.” No such restart took place. Similar pronouncements have been a semi-regular feature ever since the ITP was shut in March 2023, but Mr Abdulghani’s latest statement comes amid a renewed effort to reach terms with IOCs following last month’s Baghdad-KRG agreement (MEES, 18 July). Another complication is pressure from Ankara, which wants to renegotiate the terms of the ITP treaty. Turkey has warned it will not renew the current ITP treaty when it expires in June 2026 and is seeking renegotiated…
