Jordan received on Friday the Energos Force floating, storage, and regasification unit (FSRU) at its Aqaba port, ahead of its connection to the Arab Gas Pipeline. The unit is set to commence operations next Tuesday, facilitating the gasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, according to Jordan’s news agency.
Egypt and Jordan signed a cooperation agreement in 2024 that entails leveraging Egypt’s floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) to supply Jordan with natural gas and secure its local market demands.
Jordan will benefit from the LNG to operate its power plants, said Sufian Batayneh, General Director of National Electric Power Company (NEPCO). Besides, the Energos Force unit’s connection to the Arab Gas Pipeline will enable Egypt to tap into LNG supplies during peak demand or emergencies.
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) noted in a statement that this cooperation reflects regional integration and the joint benefit from the available infrastructure between the two sides.
MoPMR has also stressed its commitment to the continued development of Egypt’s gas sector infrastructure and strengthening joint Arab cooperation, thus enhancing energy security nationwide and meeting the needs of citizens.
The Petroleum Marine Services Company (PMS), a company affiliated with the Egyptian petroleum sector, has recently completed the development work on the United Gas Derivatives Company (UGDC) Jetty at Damietta Port. Throughout the phases of the project, PMS carried out marine surveying and dredging operations to achieve an operational depth of 14.5 meters.
It also relocated the metal structure of the jetty’s marine platform by four meters to accommodate the installation of new loading arms. Moreover, two 16-inch marine loading arms were installed to facilitate the loading and unloading of liquefied gas from FSRU units, along with the replacement and renewal of four marine fenders to ensure the safety of operations and marine units.
It is worth mentioning that Damietta port is also expected to receive Energos Winter FSRU, which has 450 mmcm/d regasification capacity and will operate in Egypt for five years upon the lease agreement signed between the unit and EGAS.
Egypt has three operating regasification units at SUMED and Sonker ports in Ain Sokhna: Energos Eskimo, Energos Power, and Hoegh Galleon. Between them, they have an overall regasification capacity of 2,250 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d). The units operate adaptively, responding to seasonal shifts and short-term changes in domestic demand.
