The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), in collaboration with Italy’s energy giant Eni, held a specialized workshop on Methane Emissions Management. Alaa El-Batal, First Undersecretary of the Ministry for Energy Efficiency, Climate, Environment, and Safety Affairs, inaugurated the event. The workshop saw broad participation from international energy companies and officials from Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) holding companies and their affiliates, representing safety, environment, energy efficiency, and production departments.
In his opening speech, El-Batal noted that this workshop is part of a series of successful events organized by the Ministry together with leading global energy companies in Egypt. The goal is to exchange expertise and boost awareness of modern technologies and best practices in energy transition and emissions reduction, in alignment with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development, according to the Ministry’s statement.
El-Batal stressed that the petroleum sector prioritises reducing methane emissions, citing their significant environmental and economic benefits. He affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with international partners to implement best practices and innovative digital technologies. This cooperation aims to support the sustainability of oil and gas resources and maximize their added value.
Eni’s expert team provided the workshop attendees with a comprehensive look at the principles and guidelines of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) initiative. Their presentation also covered various methodologies for effectively monitoring, measuring, and reporting methane emissions, complemented by insightful case studies drawn from Eni’s joint venture operations.
This initiative is part of the MoPMR’s broader effort to foster an attractive and sustainable investment environment, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce emissions.
Eni is an active player in the development and production of hydrocarbons and the implementation of gas projects in Egypt. The company operates in the refining and marketing of crude oil products. It is a shareholder in the Damietta natural gas liquefaction plant.
