The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met on Monday with the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, to discuss and review the work plan in light of developments and ongoing preparations to meet the rising demand for energy amid soaring temperatures.
The meeting reviewed indicators showing increased energy demand compared to peak loads from the previous year. To address the issue, both ministries are operating within the framework of the national energy strategy to stabilize the electric grid during peak hours, particularly through joint working committees tasked with ensuring interrupted fuel supply to power generation plants
They discussed recent efforts within the electricity sector to adjust operating patterns, improve fuel efficiency, reduce reliance on traditional fuels, enhance overall performance and energy efficiency, increase the use of renewable energy, and add 2,000 megawatts of renewable capacity to the national grid ahead of the current summer.
Minister Esmat highlighted ongoing efforts to optimise operations, reduce fuel consumption to below 65 grams of oil equivalent per kilowatt-hour, improve service quality, enhance the overall performance of the energy system, boost the efficiency of affiliated companies, and ensure a stable electricity supply that meets all demand.
For his part, Minister Badawi outlined the petroleum sector’s efforts to meet fuel requirements for power plants, particularly natural gas and mazut, through prior coordination with the Ministry of Electricity.
